More Utahns are gaining access to the express lane of the information superhighway as the beehive state will be the first in the country involved in a statewide roll out of the super high speed of the internet service from one of the largest service providers in the nation. Comcast announced on Tuesday the launch of the new internet service that will deliver speeds up to one gigabit per second for the residential customers throughout Northern Utah. The company said that lightning fast speeds will be over its current network infrastructure starting immediately. Comcast said anyone in its service area now may order the service, which the company is offering in competition with Century Link and Google Fiber, whose comparable services are available only in certain areas. While Comcast has been testing the service in other areas, Utah is the first state that is getting it rolled out as a whole throughout the company’s entire footprint, said Leslie Oliver, director of external affairs.
Merlin Jensen, area vice president of technical operations for Comcast also said that with the new 1gig service, the customers in Utah can take the benefit of superfast internet speeds using the current wiring in their home. The company has also been on the pace of doubling their network capacity every 18 to 24 months, which ensures that the company stay well ahead of customer demand and it will continue for making the investments in Utah.
Jensen also said that the average speeds foe the average residential customer is about 100 Mbps to 150 Mbps that would download a two-hour movie today in about one and half minutes. Today with that gig service, the company will be able to do that in about 8 seconds.
Because the new internet service of the company will use existing communications lines, it has the potential for broad deployment in communities across eight northern Utah counties, said Jensen in a statement including that current or new customers can access gigabit speeds with the installation of a compatible cable connection.

The individual prices for the standalone gigabit service in Utah will be $160 per month with no contract, he added. However, two promotional prices will also be tested in different areas with a one year service agreement. The company will test a $70 per month offer in certain areas in Salt Lake City, Provo, and North Ogden along with $110 per month offered all across the rest of the state, he said, additional prices and promotions may be tested I the future, he added.
